At the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Institute for Visual and Analytic Computing, Chair of Intelligent Data Analytics, subject to allocation of funds, we are filling the following position at the earliest possible date on a temporary basis for the duration of the project "THEMIS" ending on 31.08.2025:

The Becker Lab represents the Chair of Intelligent Data Analytics at the Institute for Visual and Analytic Computing and the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. You will be part of a machine learning research group in a beautiful seaside city with a strong global network, including Stanford University, UC San Diego, or UNC Chapel Hill, and a variety of national and local contacts. This gives you direct access and collaborations with leading experts in machine learning, (bio)medicine, and marine ecology worldwide. You will have the unique opportunity to work, shape, and lead within a collaborative and team-oriented group that aims to solve highly relevant, practical problems by developing cutting-edge machine learning. You will have the opportunity to manage and co-lead the BMBF AI research group THEMIS on “Using background knowledge for modeling and understanding complex systems”. In addition, we will strongly support you in developing and pushing your own independent research agenda, including acquiring your own funding and personnel in order to kickstart your career as an independent researcher and leader.
THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:
research in the fields of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in application scenarios such as (bio-)medicine and environmental change
develop and apply methods ranging from multimodal learning, deep learning, Bayesian modeling, and exceptional model mining to explainable artificial intelligence, fairness, and human-computer interaction
manage and co-lead the BMBF AI research project THEMIS on “Using background knowledge for modeling and understanding complex systems”
collaborate with international partners at universities, including Stanford, UC San Diego, or UNC Chapel Hill.
publish scientific papers in (inter-)nationally renowned conferences and journals
supervising bachelor, master, and doctoral students within the project
organize and conduct scientific events
YOUR FIT:
completed university degree (diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in in the fields of computer science, mathematics, physics, computational biology, medical informatics, or a comparable field with at least good results
completed PhD/doctorate in the above named fields with at least good results (cum laude)
strong analytical thinking skills
excellent knowledge in the development and application of machine learning methods as well as programming skills, preferably in Python, Julia, and/or R
extensive practical experience in project work and/or publishing scientific papers
experience in supervising and leading students
strong interest in the application and development of machine learning methods in high-impact applications such as (bio-)medicine and environmental change
drive to develop and apply novel methods and application settings in the field of machine learning
eagerness to experiment, curiosity, high willingness to learn, and self-motivation, as well as the ability to work in a team in interdisciplinary working groups
careful, goal-oriented, and punctual way of working, as well as the ability to work independently and to familiarize oneself with new topics
very good knowledge of the English language, both written and spoken, as well as excellent communication skills for presenting research results
